AMID the jubilation, pomp and fun fare, emotions still ran high at the recent graduation of 803 students at the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in Maseru.
While the atmosphere was abuzz, the narration of Mpho Thaatha’s story from his impoverished childhood had the audience shedding a tear.
The Bachelor of Arts Honours in Broadcasting and Journalism degree graduate said he was brought up in poverty after the death of his mother and never imagined that he would one day celebrate his graduation.
Mr Thaatha expressed gratitude to the founder of the institution, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Paduka Dr Lim Kok Wing for his kindness that had enabled him to complete his studies.
“I never even dreamed I would one day graduate but I would like to thank Dr Lim Kok Wing for his kindness that has enabled me to graduate today,” Mr Thaatha said.
The graduation also marked the celebration of the institution’s 10th anniversary.
A statement from the institution said: “The Class of 2018’s academic achievement will boost the human capital of Lesotho that is needed for the creative and innovative technology industries”.
“With the quality education that they have been equipped with, they have been encouraged to embrace a mindset that goes beyond employability to focus on ground breaking capability and industry leadership.
“Limkokwing Lesotho Class of 2018 bring to the industry, government and society, skills in managing new media technology, a problem-solving mindset that seeks innovative solutions to issues and an entrepreneurial spirit that will benefit Lesotho as it builds its competitiveness following the new global order as we press towards 2020.”
Of the 803 students who graduated, 36 were presented with awards of excellence under the President Award for Academic Excellence, President Award for Leadership, President Award for Creativity & Innovation, President Award for Command Performance and the President Award for Extra Ordinary Achievement.
“These awards are meant to recognize the best students who have made special contributions to the university. The recipients recognized here are selected for their participation in events, competitions, academic excellence and other occasions on and off campus,” a statement from the institution said.
The ceremony was graced by Her Majesty Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso, the Minister of Education and Training, Professor Ntoi Rapapa and Dr Lim Kok Wing among several other dignitaries.
